To date Fairtrade Certified products have helped to change the lives of more than 1.65 million people across 74 countries.
When we hear of the social and economic challenges faced by communities in developing countries we can feel powerless, but Fairtrade Fortnight (August 4 – 17) reminds us that the power to create change is in our hands and can be as simple as filling your office kitchen with the right supplies, or organising a Fairtrade morning tea at work.
Fairtrade Australia & New Zealand (Fairtrade ANZ), is a not-for-profit and active member of the global World Fairtrade Organisation (WFTO). Fairtrade works with a range of stakeholders, but the global system is 50 percent owned by producers representing farmer and worker organisations, to ensure funds make it back to the people who need it most.
Founded in the 1980s, the Fairtrade system is well-known the world over for championing the rights of workers in developing countries. By providing access to legitimate supply chains and placing restrictions on minimum pricing, Fairtrade gives struggling communities the power to direct their own futures.
WFTO prescribes 10 Principles that Fair Trade Organizations must follow in their day-to-day work and carries out monitoring to ensure these principles are upheld:
Because of our commitment to social and environmental prosperity here at COS, we’re proud to offer Fairtrade products to businesses across Australia #choosefairtrade. When you choose products from Fairtrade organisations such as Republica and SereniTEA, you know they were produced using safe and sustainable farming practices to protect the longevity of Fairtrade communities for generations to come.
República Organic is an Australian-owned, Fairtrade Certified producer of organic coffee and other products, while SereniTEA is also an Australian-owned, Fairtrade Certified producer of quality organic tea (whose brands include Zoetic).
The sale of República Organic products such as the below ground coffee, (Nespresso compatible) pods and drinking chocolate, has improved the lives of over 412,000 female cooperative members and their communities worldwide. Proceeds have been directed toward clean water projects, education funds, health clinics and more.
SereniTEA is an Australian-owned, premium organic and Fairtrade tea supplier based in Victoria. SereniTEA Infusions started with the idea of creating a brand that would promote peace and health. A tea concept was born that exemplified serenity for the body (tea as a calming beverage), serenity for the environment (using an organic process) and serenity for people (sourcing Fairtrade Certified teas). Their SereniTEA and Zoetic range tea bags are not only Fairtrade certified, but also free of chemicals and biodegradable.
We all know it feels good, to do good, so why not consider serving Fairtrade “cuppas” at your next morning tea, as another simple way Australian businesses can make a measurable, sustainable social and environmental impact.
